Well, it's that time of year again. Doctor Who is about to get a year older. On Saturday 23 November 2002, Doctor Who will turn 39. Doctor Who premiered on Saturday 23 November 1963. Happy anniversary to the series. Next year is the big 4-0. Unless Doctor Who decides to start lying about its age. I've never heard of a TV show hiding its age, but Doctor Who was spotted having a quick conversation with 39 year old Jack Benny regarding the subject of age.
In case anyone hasn't heard yet, Shada is coming to the internet in Spring 2003. Just hours after last week's column came out, BBCi announced that the third full length Doctor Who audio drama to be produced for the internet would be a remake of the Douglas Adams story Shada. It will star Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor, Lalla Ward as Romana, John Leeson as K9, with a full cast. It will be serialized on the BBC's Doctor Who website http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/ just like Death Comes To Time and Real Time were. It will be offered in the RealPlayer/RealOne format. Illustrations for the high speed internet version will be done by Lee Sullivan.

Originally intended to finish the 1979-1980 season, Shada was 2/3rds filmed when an industrial strike made completing the story impossible. A VHS release of Shada including the completed material and linking sections hosted by Tom Baker came out in the early 1990s, and can still be purchased in NTSC format from the US. Clips from Shada were used in TheFiveDoctors. Shada has never been televised anywhere, though UKTV in Australia did schedule it once (it was yanked from the schedule at the last minute).
Meanwhile, the countdown continues to the launch of BBC Radio 7 http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio7/ . As mentioned last week, BBC Radio 7 will feature comedies and dramas from the dawn of the BBC to today. Doctor Who will be part of the lineup, starting with the Pertwee radio stories from the 1990s. If you're in the UK, you'll need a digital radio, digital TV, or RealPlayer/RealOne on your computer to hear the channel. Outside the UK, you still need RealPlayer/RealOne, but obviously the rest of us don't get Radio 7 on the TV or radio. BBC Radio 7 will be on the air 18 hours a day, probably 7AM to 1AM UK Time. A 2 hour launch of Radio 7 will be simulcast on BBC Radio 4 from 8 to 10PM on 15 December 2002. Doctor Who will be part of that launch.
Pledge drive season is approaching for PBS stations. So expect some stations to pre-empt Doctor Who. Several stations are also going to feature Doctor Who in their pledge drives.

December 7 - Iowa Public TV http://www.iptv.org/ is giving weekly reminders during Sci-Fi Saturday Night that they will have a special pledge night for its sci-fi programming. Starts at 10PM. Only the sci-fi programming will be pledged. Red Dwarf is already renewed for 2003-2004. In an interesting twist, they are handling other sci-fi shows (including Doctor Who) the way the show Survivor handles contestants. When people pledge on December 7th, they'll be asked to vote for a sci-fi program (Doctor Who, The Prisoner, Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy, old sci-fi movies). Be warned. You are voting for the show that you want IPTV not to air in 2003-2004. More details at the fan site http://www.sffn.com/ .
Some extra airings of the Doctor Who TV Movie (starring Paul McGann) have popped up in December.

WYBE 35 Philadelphia, PA http://www.wybe.org/ had a cryptic comment on their website that they would have a Digital Launch party on November 15th. If they had it, they didn't tell anybody, and there are no reports of WYBE-DT 34 going on the air yet. Now the words digital launch party are listed for December, with no date attached.
While I try to keep the column up to date, I do sometimes miss late changes to schedules. If you see TWIDW's information getting out of synch with what your local station is actually airing, let me know ASAP.
